CAPE TOWN, South Africa - 2 September 2024 – The South African Sommeliers Association (SASA), in partnership with Stellenbosch Wine Routes, is thrilled to announce the finalists for the Best Young Sommelier of South Africa 2024 competition. This prestigious event, which recognizes the finest young talents in the South African wine industry, will culminate in an exciting final at Clara's Barn, Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate, on the 11th of September, 2024.

The finalists, who have demonstrated exceptional knowledge, skill, and passion throughout the competition, are:

  • George Young of Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate

  • Amos Sobashe, an independent wine consultant

The final competition will be held from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, following a delightful harvest table and light snacks available from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. After the competition, guests will have the opportunity to network and enjoy an array of wines, bubbles, and bowl food, celebrating the achievements of these outstanding sommeliers.

We are honored to have an esteemed panel of judges for this year’s finals:

The winner will receive an experience of a lifetime, touring France and visiting the properties of SASA partner Advini, one of the leading wine businesses in the world. This opportunity offers unparalleled insights into the global wine industry and the workings of a top-tier wine business.

Additionally, this year marks the second edition of the Michael Ratcliffe Bursary, which has become a cornerstone of the elite sommeliers' training and the Team South Africa initiative. The bursary will cover the winner’s travel costs, with the remaining funds dedicated to furthering their professional training. Moreover, the winner will have the opportunity to be invited to join Team South Africa, a prestigious group of some of the leading sommeliers in the country, working towards representing South Africa on the global stage.

Michael Ratcliffe, who sponsors the bursary, shared his enthusiasm, stating, "Investing in the next generation of sommeliers is crucial for the continued growth and success of our industry. These young professionals are the future of South African wine, and I am honored to support their journey through this competition."
